Job Description and Duties

Are you interested in protecting fish, wildlife, and plants in lakes and streams? This position handles permitting for projects affecting lake and stream resources, within the Lake and Streambed Alteration (LSA) Program. Responsibilities include reviewing notifications for proposed work, performing analyses of project impacts to fish and wildlife resources, and drafting permitting documents that include species and habitat protection measures; performing site assessments of project sites before, during, or after project implementation; and assisting law enforcement with assessments of impacts from un-permitted activities. The incumbent will share expertise of lake and stream resources with other staff; coordinate within CDFW and with other agency staff; interact with the public and addresses questions about the LSA Program; and review and assist in preparing environmental documents pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The incumbent will work as part of a team of staff doing similar work and will handle projects in an assigned portion of the Central Region's 12-county area.


This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

Working Conditions

The position requires regular use of a computer workstation for up to 8 hours each day; completing office tasks that may require the use of multiple locations in different buildings; attending meetings in person and remotely; visiting the locations of project activities, requiring travel of up to three or more hours each way and sometimes including early mornings and late nights, from cold and wet to very hot conditions; traversing uneven and possibly steep or wet terrain on project sites; travel of up to two or more days per week including occasional or routine overnight travel; driving CDFW passenger vehicles for routine travel and operating a 4WD vehicle off highway, over rough terrain, as needed. The position may require wearing a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff. Potential for an office-centered hybrid work schedule with up to two days each week teleworking.

Have knowledge or experience with terrestrial or aquatic biology, stream ecology, and/or fisheries ecology; have ability to assess impacts to lakes and streams and associated fish, wildlife, and plants; be detail-oriented; possess analytical skills; have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks concurrently; maintain a positive attitude; be able to understand and integrate specific direction regarding regulatory procedure; enjoy working in a multidisciplinary group; be able to work independently as part of a team; possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; provide excellent customer service; and be proficient with word processing and spreadsheet computer software to write, format, and proofread documents.
